Dear Green Hammerton residents,

Well it’s been an extremely busy few weeks since we took ownership of the Village Shop and Post Office.

I have been training with the Post Office and we have appointed Helen Scaife from Ousebourne to replace Alistair and we have also appointed 2 teenagers from Green Hammerton to assist with the newspaper deliveries (If you would like your daily or weekly newspaper delivered just pop in for a chat, or drop an email to On top of that we have had to get used to restocking the shop and making the best we can of the existing space we have available.

Mike and Alastair Rogers have been immensely supportive throughout this handover phase and as such we would like to formally thank them for all the knowledge and help they have provided at every turn. It is also with sadness and trepidation that we have to say goodbye to Alastair who will be leaving soon. As such, if anyone would like to say goodbye to Alastair, please be sure to pop into the shop on or before Wednesday 20th April, which is his last working day with us.

Many people have also been asking us about the opening of a village café. Unfortunately, we have as yet not received planning permission and we have also not managed to find the right partner to run the café. We have therefore made a decision to rent out the main house for the short term until we are better placed to move forward with the café.

We are also really excited about our new range of wines that we have just taken delivery of. The white wine collection starts at a refreshing £6.75 for a Spanish Viura a perfumed, refreshing white, with crisp apple skin & citrus flavours – to an excellent Sancerre from Domaine Jean Thomas which has a clean, fresh bouquet, an overt and expansive palate with gooseberries giving it added weight for £13.25. For those that appreciate a good red, our opening offers are a £6.75 Les Courtances and £6.99 Xavier Roger Malbec the palates are full-flavoured, with soft and juicy tannins, all the way up to a superb Argentinian Malbec with a great story that retails at £18.50. There is definitely a wine for everyone and for every occasion.

Finally, I am looking forward to meeting many of you at the Meet and Eat on Saturday evening. Feel free to pass on any thoughts or ideas as we would love to hear them.

We really appreciate all of the good wishes from you all and the encouraging comments on how we are improving the shop and would like to take this opportunity to thank you all. We are working hard to ensure that the Shop & PO will be exactly what this delightful village and greater community deserves. All the improvements we are planning will take time and plenty of money. As such please bear with us and also please feel free to pop in and say hello to Annette, Helen and myself at any time.

We look forward to seeing you soon,
Christopher Hay
