Green Hammerton Parish Council
A TOWN THE SIZE OF TADCASTER ON YOUR DOORSTEP
To our residents,
Harrogate Borough Council (HBC) is preparing a new Local Plan to meet the District need for new houses. HBC has decided that it will choose either Flaxby or Green Hammerton as a ‘new settlement’ for 2,500 to 3,000 new houses.
The size of the new settlement is roughly the size of a town like Tadcaster or twice the size of Boroughbridge. It will be built between Whixley Cross and Kirk Hammerton both South and North of the A59 (see map overleaf). The rural villages of Green Hammerton and Kirk Hammerton will be dominated by an urban development of closely packed houses. The Redrow development already approved gives an idea.
The Parish Councils of Green Hammerton, Kirk Hammerton and Whixley believe that Flaxby is a better site to choose. Flaxby is already set to go, a large part is a disused golf course and it is positioned next to a planned employment area. Here are some of the pros and cons:
Half way between Harrogate and York COST – Infrastructure: schools, water++
Railway stations DELIVERY – Many landowners
Single promoter Impact on existing communities
Loss of a large amount of farmland
A59 congested already
Impact on landscape
Impact on J47 of A1(M) NB Incinerator traffic also
Largely a disused golf course COST – Infrastructure: schools, water ++
Plans already in progress to develop Proximity to A1(M)
Lower cost Infrastructure costs
Few owners Loss of some farmland
Can use heat from incinerator
Next to employment area
New roundabout already built
Easier to supply gas and electricity
